Jonathan: Over the past couple of months I’ve been in discussion with a new client with a view to me acting as project manager for a ‘Grand Designs’ sort of building overseas. Terms having been agreed, I met the client yesterday for a first site meeting, east of Leverburgh, on the far side of the Sound of Harris. (As I said – overseas!) It was a long day, up at 5am for the drive north to the ferry, and back mid evening. It was also the longest spell of sunshine for months, so looking over the site without being harassed by the wind or drenched with rain was a welcome relief! The site is a half-acre plot taken out of a croft, with fabulous views south over the sea and islands. But the lane is very narrow and all the utilities are a long way away, and the ground is little more than rock with a thin covering of grass, so the ground works are going to be difficult and expensive. This kind of work is a start in a new venture – at least in a professional capacity. But in a way it is what I’ve been doing quite a lot of over the past six years or so, albeit on our own building projects.
