The house next door to our croft, and which is only rarely occupied, belongs to a Mr & Mrs Guse (pronounced Goozer, we believe), who live in Glasgow. Last year one of our geese nested in the garden, in the middle of a neglected flower bed. There are big gaps under the garden fence – in places big enough for a sheep to wriggle underneath, but hedges around the inside of the fence are so overgrown that it is very sheltered in the garden, and difficult for birds of prey to swoop down and steal eggs from the nest. No wonder, then, that she’s returned there this year!
And no wonder, too, that we’re now calling the goose Mrs Guse, her husband/gander is Mr Guse. Their six babies – hatched just yesterday, are of course the Guselings. After all, they are in residence longer than their human namesakes!
This morning the Guse family made the very long walk – at the pace of the slowest Guseling – round to our croft store, where they petitioned for increased rations – on account of having dependents. Who could refuse?
