Denise: July gives way to August, and likewise gooseberries and blackcurrants give way to peas and beans. For a few days, however, we top, tail and pod. I started picking broad beans a few days ago, and today the first trays garden peas! Over the years here we’ve had pretty consistent success with peas, and we grow enough to provide us with plenty the year through. In fact right now we still have some of last year’s peas in the freezer: they’ll have to go into an aubergine bake or similar. But now we can add the freshest sweetest of the new peas to salads – whilst 99% of them go straight into the freezer.
