Tilly

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 09/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise28/06/2017

Denise: Ok then, here are the much-awaited photos. Not very good I’m afraid: she is so ‘hyper’ that they come out as a blur! Anyway, they show what we’ve been up to this morning – a lovely walk along Prince’s Beach [in Eriskay] again. Tilly is wearing her new red collar – lead matches, so very smart get up. You see she loves a nice paddle, but doesn’t go in the water too far. We played at throw and catch bits of rope and seaweed and beach combed. Found a huge sea urchin shell – not quite whole – and … Continue reading →

Train v Pain

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 08/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise09/06/2012

Jonathan: Today, for a change, I’ve come to Chelmsford by train. Walk to Welwyn GC station, train south to Moorgate (but signal failure meant I had to change to another very crowded train at Finsbury Park), walk to Liverpool St Station (no signs to give directions), and then train north-east to Chelmsford, then short walk to office.  Time taken 1h 50mins door to door. Driving the far more direct east-west route along the A414 is just 40 miles (and about half that on dual carriageways) – but has never taken less than 1h 30mins, maximum so far 1h 45mins. I … Continue reading →

Tilly

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 07/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise28/06/2017

Denise: I’m sitting in the conservatory and for once I’m not carding wool, spinning it, knitting or anything remotely like.  I am making a fuss of Tilly, the sort of gentle fuss that is intended to distract and calm a very excitable young thing.  And Tilly is VERY excited because she has just this afternoon arrived at her new home, and there’s so much to discover. Tilly is NOT another cat (7 is a very nice number to have – a pity to spoil that!); and she is NOT a greyhound.  Tilly, is a black labrador, about 2 years old, … Continue reading →

The fashion accessories angels can only dream of

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 05/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise16/04/2015

Jonathan: Have you noticed that angels always seem to be dressed in white? A golden-yellow white as opposed to an Ariel or Daz blue-white, it’s true, but white nonetheless. I can’t say whether the cut of the cloth, or the tailoring varies much from one angel to another, just they they alway seem to very bright and lacking any adornment, pattern or texture.  You’d think that up there – beyond the reach of vanity, envy, avarice, lust or other incidentals to that earthly phenonomenon called fashion – they could indulge themselves a little without falling into sin. But apparently not. … Continue reading →

Knitting the wrong way

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 05/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise09/06/2012

Denise: Knitting hats went wrong last night and I had to knit backwards a bit where I was decreasing.  Difficult to see these days.

Sunday afternoon blues

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 05/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise04/10/2015

Jonathan: And it isn’t even the afternoon yet ;~( Ennui, they called it in the 19th century.  Women trapped in unchallenging lives by social mores and gender discrimination. It’s the unchallenging and trapped bit that applies in my case – though hopefully not for much longer. The forecast for the weekend was promising, but in truth it’s just been warm and grey. Not that it would have made much difference if it had been fresh and sparkly: I just don’t have the motiviation, the enthusiasm, the emotional desire to engage in this land of strangers and strangeness. During the week … Continue reading →

Second thoughts … ?

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 03/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise28/06/2017 1

Denise: Here’s from an email that makes me have second thoughts – I could not bear the thought of anything happening to our lovely cats, or our hens, or our sheep … These ex racing dogs can cause chaos and blood baths. Our next door neighbour started homing them, what was soon learnt was these dogs will chase anything that moves quickly. As you have 7 cats around the house you may see a dramatic decline in the family, also chichens if they start flapping wings and running round they to would become a target, possibly even the sheep. All these … Continue reading →

Introducing … Garry the Greyhound

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 02/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise28/06/2017 3

Jonathan: Just as a drop of water will wear away a stone, Denise has over the past few months been dropping regular hints about greyhounds.  D: Wouldn’t it be lovely … ?  D [a few mintues later, pointing at website photo]: Look  – Isn’t he cute …?! J: Hmmm.  D: You’re not even looking! J: Hmmph! You know the sort of thing.  Well the stone must have got so thin you could see through it, because this morning I gave way to the inevitable and said okay, in principle – you can look into it. By this afternoon we were … Continue reading →

Buffy and her 20 babies

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 02/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise06/01/2015

Denise: Buffy is a super-mum!  Yesterday, I added to her own clutch of recently hatched chicks all those just hatched from an incubator – last night she managed to shelter 20 chicks, most less than a day old, under her voluminous skirts (Buff Orpingtons have feathering like crinolines!) and this morning they were all present and correct.  What a marvellous mother she is! Today the chicks have been out in the run with her, some even climbing up and riding around on her back! For visitors to the Big Garden, it’s been quite a circus show: if I get round … Continue reading →

Chelmsford

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 01/09/2010 by Jonathan and Denise31/12/2018

Jonathan: Working at Mouchel office in Chelmsford today – very near the station.  Took 80mins to travel 40miles there and another 30mins finding somewhere to park. Carrying out an independent check of major changes to a new road already under construction.  The scheme is the extension of a Roscommon Way in Canvey Island, from the roundabout by Morrisons to industrial and housing areas close to the Thames shore.  It was designed as a dual carriageway, but due to spending cuts it is being reduced to a single carriageway.  Over 32 years in this business I’ve worked on lots of ‘dualling’ … Continue reading →

Farewell to August

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 31/08/2010 by Jonathan and Denise31/12/2018

Jonathan: Still August -just! – but as everyone is saying it already feels like late September. There’s something about the light, the temperature, dew on the grass, the smell of the soil … and already dry soils and hot winds have resulted in some leaves turning golden already. But how I love this time of year! Winter and Summer are straightforward in what they promise (though rarely live up to!). Spring and Autumn are seasons of contrast and contrariness: Spring of glad relief and untamed hope; and now in Autumn a time of poignant reflection … and a solemn dread … Continue reading →

Blue Rodeo

The Big Garden and Croft Posted on 29/08/2010 by Jonathan and Denise31/12/2018

Jonathan: Motorhome, Welwyn Garden City.  Bank Holiday weekend – Sunday. Dark outside now, curtains drawn, listening to Canadian band Blue Rodeo – Five Days in July: great stuff.  Introduced to this seriously great band by my colleague Tia Nagi.   Tia’s a Sikh, from Kenya, now living in Hemel Hempstead, but brought up in Calgary, Canada. The only Sanskrit-speaking cowgirl I’ve ever come across! Thanks to Tia I’ve developed a real curiosity about Canada.  Thanks to Google Earth and street view I’ve driven from Calgary along the Trans-Canada Highway to Banff, looked round the shops and explored the back streets.  I’ve … Continue reading →
