Seasonal Knitting

Denise >

Here’s some seasonal knitting in my work-bag : a couple of Shetland Lace Scarves. As fast as I’m knitting them, you’re buying them!  They’re approximately 120cm long by 22cm wide, and very very light. The yarn is 100% Fine Merino, hand-spun by me with a ‘random’ selection of pre-coloured ‘tops’.

The price is £78.00 for either. Check our Hebridean Woolshed page for p+p charges.

To buy, email me to check availability. I can send an electronic invoice for secure payment by card.

BLF + Merino

Jonathan >

I’m spinning a 4-ply yarn with just 2-strands.  That’s because there is a weight/thickness that, in the UK, is known as 4-ply, and which is somewhat thinner/lighter than Doubleknit (aka DK).  I’m spinning one strand with my own selection of pre-coloured Merino tops. The other strand is from a naturally oatmeal-coloured Blue-Faced Leicester.

Shetland and Flax

Hebridean Woolshed : Handspun Shetland and Flax

These two skeins were handspun with equal measures of Flax (in a natural creamy white) and Shetland wool (a natural peaty brown).  The Shetland is fine and soft – like the Merino, but has the fine crimp that traps air and makes the yarn and garments made with it ‘springy’ and warm.  The Flax, spun in a semi-worsted fashion, is smooth and slippy, and contributes to the finished yarn an easy drape, resilience, and a measure of sheen. It’s a great combination for a scarf.

The Hebridean Woolshed : New! - Crochet shopping bags

D > Through the winter I worked on the design and first examples of a few new products, and amongst those are these totes and bags.  There are two types shown here : crochet bags (in three sizes) in our own Cheviot wool naturally dyed with plant-extracts ; and, in vertical stripes , woven tote bags in Harris Tweed woollen twill, fully lined with a sturdy cotton fabric.

The Hebridean Woolshed : Luxury scarf with Angelina

Denise > Here’s a scarf that I finished making today.  The handspun warp is made with wool from Masham sheep – which are native to a certain district in northern England.  The weft, too, is handspun, with wool from Merino sheep (dyed purple and lavendar), white Shetland sheep, and just a few grams of Angelina – a synthetic fibre that sparkles with the colours of the fibres it is spun together with.  Used sparingly, it adds a touch of magic to a winter wardrobe.  I wove the scarf on our Glimåkra floor loom, then washed and tented it, before finishing it with my ‘handwoven’ label.

The Hebridean Woolshed : Shawl/Wrap in Shetland, Masham, Merino and Silk

This Ladies’ Wrap or Shawl will certainly make a statement, with a generous size of approx. 40cm wide, 260cm long (plus twizzled fringes), hand-woven with hand-spun yarns, and made with luxury fibres – wool from Shetland, Masham and Merino sheep, and natural tussah silk.
