This lovely tomato is the first from our greenhouses in 2021! Due to the long cold wet spring, that’s about three weeks later than ‘usual’.
We’re always so grateful for the first tomatoes – they’re so fragrant and fresh and sweet and tasty! (especially compared to uniformly tasteless tomatoes from the supermarkets).
Indeed, we’re always grateful for every single tomato – and evert ounce of dried tomato, and every jar of pasata (of which we still have some left from last year’s harvest).
We’ve started harvesting beetroot, too : whether raw and grated or boiled and sliced, they’re incomparably fresh, tasty and sweet!
This year, the bounty of our garden is an especially poignant pleasure ; because it will be our last harvest from the walled garden.
A sale has been agreed, and the lawyers have everything in hand. It will be painful leaving, of course ; and yet not without a pang of pleasure. The buyers love the garden for what we’ve made of it, and will be writing a new book in a continuing story, but with a new cast of characters, other than the wall itself.
