Leth Meadhanach – Beinn Mhor
Jonathan >
Leth Meadhanach is the name of the crofting township in the foreground. The name means ‘Middle Part’, though the English name is South Boisdale. The building nearest the camera would originally have been a traditional thatched house. Having been usurped by a modern house (out of view) the roof was changed by building up gables and covering roof trusses with galvanized corrugated steel. Note the rounded corners of the original stone walls : this was to reduce wind turbulence – and the damage that will cause – in the frequent winter storms.
Beinn Mhor, in the far distance, is the highest peak in Uist, at 620m/2034ft. Appropriately, the name means ‘Big Mountain’ – as plain a name as the mountain itself.
What a gorgeous landscape!
