A few days ago we parted with all our remaining chickens – three Buff Orpington hens : they’ve started a new life in retirement with Tracy, in Benbecula. We’ll now be buying our eggs – and we’ll get them from those with small flocks who look after their birds well ; and indeed we’ve already bought our first box of eggs since 2005, from Catriona Walker.
Here’s a retrospective of our two main flocks, over the years.
So, first comes the Welsumer flock : their patch was the bottom field (Field 1) of our croft in Eriskay. With their sleek plumage, compact body and sturdy legs, they were perfect for the windy conditions where they lived, on our croft in Eriskay, down by the shore.
Here’s the Buff Orpingtons, best of all for backyard poultry. Due to their large round bodies and voluminous ‘under-skirts’, they were based here in the walled garden. We built for them a good solid hen-house with a large yard, to which we brought, in addition to the standard bagged feeds, generous supplies of greens and other delicacies from the garden and kitchen.
The days of keeping are over ; but the knowledge and pleasure live on!
